The Freshmaker

Today after getting caught in a YouTube link vortex* I realized: this whole first world problems meme was stolen from Mentos Freshmaker commercials (mostly 90s Mentos commercials). If you don’t believe me check out some of these “emergency” situations you could experience if you found yourself in a Mentos commerical:

  • You are saying goodbye to your family as they are going out for a lovely afternoon on the lake in the family boat. They leave the dock only for you to discover they still have your car keys. Note: If they turned back, it would be 5 possibly 10 minutes of boating in the wrong direction.
  • Your waiter ignores you at a restaurant. He could be come over to the table in 5 minutes or 5 hours, you have no way of knowing. What you do know is you are waiting a long time for your complimentary water.
  • Someone takes the nearest available baggage cart you wanted to put your duffel bags on. That was probably the only one in the whole airport, so naturally you give up all hope.
  • You have a hard time finding parking when you go to the beach to surf in your leisure time. You could go down the street a little more or try the next block, but then you might have to walk or something.
  • Your mom tries to talk to you while you are hanging out with your cool friends at the mall. Remember, she is wearing a very uncool mom hat and trying hard to connect with you. She probably even loves you and wants to make sure you have enough money for more flannel and floppy hair cuts.

Now the “victims” of these crimes could throw a fit, whine, build up major road rage, or complain to a nearby authority figure. However instead Freshmakers laugh off their silly problems, Macgyver their way out of the situation, and somehow become friends with everyone in sight, including the people who caused the “problems” (I have never seen so many smiles and knowing-friendship-glances in one commercial slot. It appears all things are forgiven if someone manages to be clever or quirky along the way.). All while maintaining cool, minty breath, of course — thus setting them apart from their modern day twitter hashtag counterparts. #Freshmakerforever

*For those of you unfamiliar with this term, it’s when you go to YouTube for one reason and then end up clicking on similar videos in an addictive fashion.

Oh and in case you find yourself in any of the above situations, here are the proposed Mentos solutions. The first one was not mentioned in the list above, but probably has the best solution of them all (Bonus Freshmaker!):

Note: This one appears to be a more recent production which means the video quality is better, but the jingle seems strangely remixed in an attempt to be modern.

Currently: Keeping my fingers crossed for an early spring!

Snowed In

At first a snow day seems like a nice, cozy idea (Mind you I use the term snow day loosely, as I hate driving in snow and am easily trapped by bad weather). You settle down with a warm blanket, a cup of cocoa, and that book you’ve been meaning to read. You put together a list of things you’ll do while you’re tucked away from the outside world and its demands. You’ll organize the hall closet, write letters to people, clean your room, work on that craft project, watch that tv show you love, and bake bread. It will be great! Wonderful, even.

Then five minutes later you find your self lying upside down on the couch thinking “This is how it ends. Me. Alone. In my apartment surrounded by a frozen tundra.”

For some reason being snowed in really slows me down and puts me in a discouraging mood. Every time I try to do anything of value I feel so unmotivated and get overly focused on how I can’t leave. Out loud I’ll say “I should just make the best of it and do some dishes while I’m stuck inside.” but my subconscious will interject and say, “But first you should probably mentally prepare yourself by watching 12 hours of television shows that you don’t really care about.” Once I start to see the idiocy of this, I generally try to get myself out of this state by peeping out the window and acting shocked at how much snow has accumulated in the last five minutes. Then when I stop doing that I’ll look at my laptop, and go, oh, wait! Is that the internet? Those ombre cakes  and shabby chic furniture ideas aren’t going to pin themselves. Better get to it. After that there really is no hope. I mean really, those pages, literally don’t end.

Luckily there is a cure to prevent this:

Step one: Draw the shades. If you are like me you will get overly preoccupied with how much snow is building up. Just ignore all that nonsense and move on with your life.

Step two: Make dinner. Hanger is not going to help this situation. Note: A bag of chips does not count as dinner. Your mind will tell you it doesn’t matter all you’re doing is staying inside today, but those chips are in reality tiny little laziness anchors that will weigh you to the couch for eternity.

Step three:  Put on real clothes. Pajamas were not meant to be worn from 9-5. Besides now a days we have things like jeggings, which are just pajama pants society lets us wear in public, so it’s really not that hard to get dressed. Don’t hate; I say this with gratitude, some days are not meant for uncomfortable pants. Don’t try to deny it either. I mean we’ve all seen the pajama jeans ads. Someone is buying them! And if pajega jeans was a real thing we’d wear those too.

Step four: Pick one task you most feel like doing and start doing it. Even if you should be doing something else. One moment of creativity and accomplishment begets another.

Step five: Create a proper snowy day soundtrack and dance it out.*

*Author’s note: Dancing it out is usually an acceptable final step to any problem solving process.

Currently: Sad I didn’t get to go see Austenland at Sundance this year. However, I heard it’s been picked up, so I’ll just have to be patient and wait for it to come out.

Good things come in threes…or sometimes twos…or sevens…or…

I am lucky to have good things come to me often. These are some good things lately:

Trio. I tried to eat here one night a few months ago and after we’d sat down, had our drinks, and given our orders, the power went out. So, no trio for us. But thank goodness I finally went back, cause it was delish. If you go I think you should get the rosemary flatbread. It has goat cheese, roasted peppers, caramelized onions, and tomatoes. It’s pretty wonderful.

Dry Cucumber Soda. I had this at Trio (see the afore mentioned other good thing). I got it just for kicks because I’d never heard of cucumber soda, but I ended up loving it. However I was worried. The waiter said they imported these drinks from somewhere in Seattle and they were only here for the season. How would I ever find this drink again? Surely I would have to search for endless hours on the internet to find their obscure origin.

Or it would be the first hit on Google. And you can easily order them online. Guess I’m behind on the times.

dry cucumber soda. Mine did not come garnished with cucumbers and artfully placed on highly reflective surfaces, but was delicious nonetheless.

Movie time. Recent watches include The Impossible and Ruby Sparks. The Impossible made me cry (which I don’t really do in movies). Ruby Sparks made me want to visit the Big Sur, take more chances, be my true self, and write, write, write.

New recipes. Part of my new years resolutions was to cook more and I’ve found some good recipes; my favorite so far was probably the Moroccan Chicken and Lentils. I’ve also been pleasantly surprise to find that a few nights of cooking goes a long, long way.

Unhinged. This is place is great. You should probably go there. It’s tucked away in Sugarhouse (1121 east 2100 south SLC, UT) and is full of wonderful things. Like clothes, and jewlery, and art, and great local designers. I got this:

Nifty, right? It also came with a case, flash, the original manual, and one final picture that the previous owner never removed.

Best Week Ever! It’s back! Can’t wait. Now, I just have to figure out where I can watch it since I don’t have VH1.

BWE! So many great times with this show!

Currently: Happy after a night of pancakes and dancing it out despite having to reschedule and cancel plans. I guess even large amounts of snow can be a good thing. Oh, also got to spend a lot of time catching up with family via telephone, which is always good :)
