Favorite Things

Here are some of my favorite things lately:

Festival and Fair things

September brings many events. And many foods.

Greek Festival

Close up of the Greek pastries.

Utah State Fair! I recommend the sprinkle dipped ice cream cone or the fried Oreos.

Gilmore Girl things

For the 16th anniversary of Gilmore Girls and in anticipation of the upcoming revival, 200 coffee shops around the country turned into Luke’s Diner for the day. There were two such “diners” in Salt Lake. I missed out on the merch, but I did get to see the sign. The shop was also playing Gilmore Girl episodes on a projector.

Stranger Things

If you haven’t watched Stranger Things yet it deserves some screen time. Some friends of mine had a Stranger Things party and it was a-mah-zing. I loved seeing everyone’s costumes. We even had a friend make a great demogorgon mask.

Not pictured: Short hair eleven, demogorgon, Will’s house, and Toothless.

Barb stole the show [typical]. My “Barb” was more of an homage to what Barb would wear in present time.

SERIOUS BARB FACES. DON’T UNDERSTIMATE A BARB.

Dine O’ Round things

If you haven’t heard of Dine O’ Round it’s basically one time a year where the restaurants of downtown Salt Lake City do special deals/meals. It lasts about two weeks, which trust me, is enough time to do some serious damage.

img_6948

Dine O’ Round led me to some new places this year, including Taco Taco.

img_6943

Obsessed with this Taco Taco decor.

I also visited an old favorite, Gourmandise.

Musical things

This was a great show! Now I’m extra-excited for the live action movie to come out.

img_7297

These were also great [albeit very different] musical shows.

img_7211

Tegan and Sara! I love them. I’m glad I got to see them [again]. Caity has been with me to witness the magic both times!

img_7241

Couldn’t leave Tegan and Sara without this jacket. I mean, c’mon.

Cute animal things

Cute animals are kind of a given when it comes to things people love. However, even if you think you’ve seen it all, I recommend you look at this prissy_pig on instagram. These tiny little pigs in pajamas KILL ME. YOU’RE WELCOME.

Ice cream things

I’m obsessed with this flat, Roll With It Creamery ice cream. The only problem is I have to go to Provo to get it.

Fall color things

Finally, what kind of list would this be if I didn’t talk about the colors changing? One of the best parts of living in Utah is experiencing fall here.

Currently: Getting in the October mood with some Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hope you’re having a good fall, full of your own favorite things.

Brunch – It’s What’s for Dinner

Like many people my age, I have a totally normal and completely healthy obsession with brunch. Brunch is somehow more magical than those other meals. There are few better ways to start your day.

The sadness of this obsession is if you work from 9-5 you have a very limited brunch window. This is why while the IT guy was rebooting my computer the other day I pitched him this super excellent, brunch friendly work week schedule:*

Four 9 hour work days [Mon – Thursday] followed by a 4 hour Friday. Now, most big office can’t have everyone leaving in the middle of the day on Friday [at least the little people who answer the phones and such]. This necessitates people alternating morning and afternoon shifts. The day you have your afternoon shift you have a perfect brunch window.

This may not seem like much, but that’s 2 extra potential brunch days a month or 24 a year. That’s a lot of gourmet twists on traditional comfort foods and expertly cooked bacon.

Let’s work on making this a reality. European employees get siestas and close down their businesses for weeks at a time, the least we deserve is a few more brunch days in the work calendar.

In the spirit of this brunch celebration here are some great SLC places I’ve brunched:

  • Park Cafe
  • Eggs in the City
  • Blue Plate Diner
  • Finns
  • Grand America Hotel
  • Wild Grape
  • Pig & A Jelly Jar
  • The Original Pancake House
  • The Rose Establishment
  • Evas [ Not to be confused with Eva, small plates]
  • Ruth’s Diner

Also, here is my SLC Brunch wishlist:

  • Frida Bistro
  • Rye
  • Em’s Restaurant
  • Lazy Day Cafe
  • Caffe Niche
  • Penny Ann’s. I will however, be tempted to try pie with breakfast.
  • Faustina
  • Pago
  • Bambara
  • Finca
  • Eva [Not to be confused with Evas, the bakery]

SLC friends, am I missing anything ?? Also, please say you’ll come with me : ) The only thing better than brunch is a brunch shared of course! And by share, I mean share each other’s company, and not my actual food. Sorry, them’s the brunch rules.

[Note: Thanks to this list for helping me vet recommendations. Also some of these, like Rye, Faustina, and Penny Ann’s, I’ve been to for other meals, but never brunch. ]

*The IT guy was receptive, but more interested in fixing my browser issues so I’ll mark him as “tentative” for a pro-brunch workplace

Currently: Trying a new workout thing called “tendonitis.” Oops. Thankfully the people in my life are taking good care of me. My sister and Derek even brought my a little pie from Press Sweet Cidery last night [Pie, of course, is a highly recommended treatment for tendonitis].

Weekending

How did I weekend this weekend?

Well I accidentally stumbled into the latest SLC spot, Granary Row

You can tell they are trying really hard to make this a place where all the cool kids will want to go.

IMG_2217

But I think it’s working.

IMG_2218

The containers are shops and at the end you can see all the food trucks gathered there.

At least I very much enjoyed it. Can’t speak for the cool kids of course ;)

IMG_2240

Everything is colorful!

IMG_2223

And mobile.

IMG_2221

Cute little bows? Headbands? Fun prints? I love being the target demographic.

IMG_2227

Plus they grow plants in kid pools. Which is almost fun enough that it doesn’t remind me of how I’m such a plant killer lately. The community garden stuff seems good (Probably because I’m in no way the primary caretaker… I’ve only been by once this month, but I’m trying to remedy this.) , but the work plants are very much struggling.

I mean look at this yummy meal I had courtesy of Off the Grid. Have I mentioned I’m a sucker for food trucks? And that they are half the attraction here? On Saturday some of the truck’s I saw included the Grilled Cheese Truck, a hot/frozen chocolate truck, Mom’s, the Little Blue Bistro, and a few taco trucks.

IMG_2241

This was the Awesome Con Queso (A sandwich with waffles as bread!) with a side of smashed potato. So. Good.

I can’t wait to go when there is some entertainment present.

IMG_2220

Look at all that stage. Just waiting.

And on a completely non-granary note, I also saw Much Ado About Nothing. It was pretty entertaining (If you’re a Joss Whedon fan you’ll be very happy with the cast).

Currently: enjoying Master Chef
