Dear Texas, I Love You

I recently spent a glorious extended weekend with some people that I love [my parents] in a place that I love [Texas].  It felt like I was there for just a minute, but I did my best to squeeze in as many good times [and food] as possible. Basically my trip was this: swim, eat, repeat. All with wonderful people. Glorious, I know. In case you are wondering what that looks like, here you go:

These are from our day at Surfside. There wasn’t very much seaweed in the water and it was a beautiful day.

We were greeted by patriotism and Texas pride.

Bella came with us and loved it. Although she was scared to go to far into the ocean. Although I am the one who seems to be a jellyfish magnet [seems to happen to me more than it should], but luckily it was a little sting that faded fast.

We also brought a kite with us. This is my dad’s fancy kite [ you can steer it and make it do tricks and such].

For some reason I felt it would be a really good idea to try and film this kite and only the kite, with little to no people shots. Now when my future children ask me about family life before they were born I can play a 1:00 clip of wind tunnel noises and a tiny kite flying in the air with tiny people occasionally in the frame while the rest of you losers are showing off posed photos with smiling faces of your loved ones.

On the way home from the beach we weren’t feeling the Purple Cow, so we stopped at the next possible restaurant [a Chili’s] as we were all crazy hungry from our day of leisure. I bring this up because I guess they have all these interactive screens now, which allowed me and my mom to get very competitive and school everyone at entertainment trivia. Now some of you may say our opponents were “computers” or some sort of nonsense, but I like to think these were all Chili’s patrons around the world who were all amazed at our ability to recall upcoming film trailers and leading actors.

I also managed to wedge in plenty of pool time, a trip to the movie theater with my Dad [Planet of the Apes, after which I kept forcing him to do the ape you-are-the-leader hand gesture], great Tex-Mex, massages at the mall [don’t knock it till you’ve tried it], Cuban food, and a little shopping. I mean c’mon what trip is complete without a new outfit?? I also showed my parents 20 Feet from Stardom, a must if you haven’t seen it yet [It’s on Netflix right now so you have no excuse]. It’s about backup singers and their struggle to make it into the spotlight. It’s an interesting movie and a good watch for anyone pursuing a creative dream.

Mama and me soaking in the sun.

On Saturday I accompanied my dad on his morning bike ride. He modified it to accommodate me, so naturally it included a stop at Whataburger for a honey butter chicken biscuit, some of the best breakfast there is. We also went down this path that was lined with all edible trees (walnute, guava pineapple, passionfruit, etc.) that I loved. Dad is an excellent riding companion and shows you all the best routes and keeps pace with you very well (even when you are sleepy and slow).

Going home also means seeing a lot of great people, including my grandparents, everyone in my parent’s ward, the lovely Young family, and my friend Kimberly. Kimberly has two adorable girls who liked me even though I promised them I’d go swimming with them and then didn’t [the pool was closed!!]. We improvised and had ice cream instead, which in my opinion is always a good backup.

Oh and did I mention I was welcomed with this?

Thanks for the wonderful weekend Mom and Dad.

It’s always good to be home.

Currently: trying my hand at gourmet popsicle making. Wish me and my Apple-pear-flaxseed pops luck.

From Sugar Land to Sugar House

Or the story of how I lured my family away from Texas to visit me :)

My parents were able to drop by for a weekend recently to see me and Gabby. It started with wonderful anticipation of the Utah weather to come:

My Dad will probably never leave Texas.

My Dad will probably never leave Texas.

I tried my best to show them some good SLC eats, including Evas and Faustinas:

And they loved it! But who wouldn’t love Evas?

While in Evas we spent way too long trying to coordinate a window frame picture (as you can see Dad never made it into his spot).

IMG_4134

Sadly Gab was not able to join us for this portion of the day because of some dumb thing called “work.”

Good eats also included Red Iguana. And Sopapillas. Yum.

We saw two of our favorite April birthday girls: Mary and Camie.

IMG_4159And of course there was also lots of goofing off with the sibling.

IMG_4167One night my Mom and I managed to squeeze in a late night stroll at the Capital [People with long distance family members know long, meandering  conversations in person are just better than long, meandering conversations via telephone. Even if it means you don’t multitask.].

And last, but not least, we also spent a lot of time watching this:

All in all it was a good weekend. The days flew by too quickly, but I was so grateful for every single one.

Shenanigans not pictured included: us taking full advantage of the hotel hot tub, pizza night, everyone helping me get things done (I am very lucky), Sunday driving, liberty park, and a girls’ night shopping trip.

Currently: Experiencing a lot of those spring showers people like to rhyme about.

Take Me to the Ocean

If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been lately the answer is… Florida [at least it was for a couple of days]. I joined my family for a last minute vacation in Destin a few weeks ago.

It was divine.

It had all the elements of a proper family vacation, such as:

The Ocean

Mom and Dad enjoying the view

Mom and Dad enjoying the view

We were visiting during peak tourist season so the beaches were full, but we still had a lot of fun. We set up our shelter and spent hours enjoying the ocean. We brought our boogie boards and our kite.

Bike Riding

We rented bikes and had a lot of fun riding them around the little community where we were staying. One of the bike paths took us down to Baytowne Wharf, a little town square of sorts. In addition to the bike paths my Dad and I rode our bikes to Winn Dixie one morning (where they did not carry Red Vines!). We also found an abandoned set of shops while we were walking and biking around. We were fascinated by the little ghost town.

Some of our neighbors

Some of our neighbors, we were by a different little bay. We stayed in a house instead of a high rise, which was really nice. Our neighbors were quiet and the house was very comfy. There was also a pool for residents to use, which we took full advantage of. One night we even had it to ourselves!

Reading Time

I managed to read four books on my vacation including:

  • City of Bones (Slightly addictive. I can’t wait to read the next one)
  • Between the Lines (Meh, not my favorite Jodi Picoult book)
  • Splintered (Fun take on the Alice in Wonderland story)
  • Gone Girl (Intriguing, but also a bit dark w/some harsh language… maybe I’ve just been reading too much fluffy YA lit lately?)

Waffles

Of course every vacation needs good food, especially breakfast food.

Waffle House Model :)

Good way to start the day

I cannot express how happy Gabby was to go to waffle house. It was how we got her out of bed in the morning. We designated the day Waffle Wednesday!

Our eyes may have been bigger than our stomachs haha

Our eyes may have been bigger than our stomachs haha Not even we can eat that much

Other yummy food we encountered in Destin: Graffiti, yummy jumbo shrimp and homemade key lime pie at a beachside restaurant, pizza night, and a homemade meal from Dad.

Shopping

Destin has some outlet malls so of course we had to make a stop. It didn’t hurt that we were all sunburned and needed some shade for awhile. My Dad hung in there [we can really marathon shop] and later Gab and I went with him on a more Dad-friendly activity: watching Pacific Rim.

Airport Adventures

I had a five hour layover on the way there which meant there was a lot of time to experience the Houston airport . Too bad all my Houston family was taking that time to drive to Destin! However I found plenty of ways to keep myself busy [including a Parks and Rec marathon via Netflix].

Plus there were some good snacks on hand. I mean, Whataburger and Shipleys in the same terminal? Yes!

Whataburger!

Whataburger!

A less fun airport adventure was my poor parents trying to find the Destin airport. The GPS lead them astray (a fact the friendly security guard told me happens all the time), but in the end they did find me.

Oh, and did I mention I got upgraded to first class on the way home?? This was a first for me and I definitely enjoyed flying in style.

Soooo much leg room.

Soooo much leg room.

And the most important step for a proper family vay-cay….These amazing people:

Mom, Dad, and Gab

The fam!

It was lovely to get away and just spend time with the people I love. I can’t wait to see them again [thank goodness school is starting and they’ll all be driving up here soon].

Currently: taking it easy after a fun weekend where I finally saw The Way Way Back [Loved it!] and attended a bridal shower for my good friend Teal [Love her too].
