Follow the Yellowstone Road

My second day of Jackson we decided to drive through Grand Teton National Park and up to Yellowstone. Yellowstone is pretty vast, so we decided to go to infamous Old Faithful and keep our exploring to that part of the park. The drive up was gorgeous. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. It was all sunshine, blue skies, and lovely drives.

Look wildlife!

IMG_5181

Even more wildlife! [Please try to ignore the windshield wipers and air freshener. Animals do not wait for you to get out of your car so you can have a photo op.] Anytime there was more than two people pulled over to the side of the road everyone would just pull over in hopes they were watching some animal. And usually they were. I made one minivan full of foreign tourists very happy by pointing out some elk, haha.

We wound our way through the Tetons and took a break to admire Oxbow Bend. Sadly I couldn’t get close enough to get a good picture, but while we were there a family of otters was playing on the banks [Or so the guy with the ultra zoom lense reported. I mostly saw splashing and little tiny possible otter or beaver like creatures].

As we kept driving there were piles of yet to be melted snow stacked up on the sides of the road and still thawing lakes that stretched out into oblivion. The pictures don’t do it justice at all. The first time we spotted this out the window we were in total awe.

We somehow had magical timing at Old Faithful and got there about ten minutes before it went off. One of the best parts of the Old Faithful experience was the anticipation around us. There was a huge group of people gathered around waiting for the big moment and the kids were especially freaking out.

IMG_5369

Check out these crowds of anxious people. They wrapped all the way around the geyser viewing area. P.S. Sorry family who was right in front of my crowd shot. I hope this isn’t weird to have a random close up of their profiles!

Any time a puff of steam would come out everyone would freak out and start arranging their cameras only to have to wait 5 more minutes. But thankfully there were only a few false alarms and then Old Faithful erupted, just as expected [true to it’s name].

The first (or last) bit of the show. I’m a bit fuzzy on photo order.

And there it goes!

Old Faithful in all it’s glory.

The aftermath.

After Old Faithful erupted we hiked around the area and saw some more geysers and hot pools [Is that what you call them?]. There were other great hikes not too far away. Most of them had boardwalks over the area because the ground is thin and there is those hot pools everywhere. We saw some other geysers that were smaller than Old Faithful, but still fun to watch. After they were done going off they created these great looking steam clouds.

They called this one the Castle Geyser

They call this one the Castle Geyser. We didn’t see it erupt but it had one of the coolest rock formations surrounding it.

IMG_5668

We were able to get a lot closer to this geyser than Old Faithful. There were a few points were I was convinced I was going to get splashed, haha.

We couldn’t have magical timing for every single geyser. Some we just had to settle for observing like this. Still great scenery though.

Buy my favorite part was  the hot pools/ sulfur pots [Again, whatever you want to call them]. In fact I think my favorite thing deserves it’s own post, don’t you? Stay tuned.

Currently: surprised by how much I liked Edge of Tomorrow. Very entertaining! I highly recommend it for your summer blockbuster fix.

We’ve been on the Run, Driving in the Sun

[Day 3:The day where we drive, drive, drive]

The day begins with us bidding farewell to Watsonville’s strawberries, sand dollars, and foggy dunes. And of course, our little beach side home.

We decide to stop in Carmel for lunch. We dutifully follow the signs directing us to beach parking and find ourselves considerably uphill from the actual shoreline. Cute little homes line our beach bound path. When we reach the ocean it’s the foggiest piece of coast yet, giving us the strange illusion we are in a small, relatively little known beach. Sans blanket we are forced to practice our balancing skills to keep our food as sand free as possible. But the more immediate danger are the birds lurking behind us, waiting to swoop for scraps as soon as our backs are turned.

CaliforniaTrip 212

Then we take to the coastal highway.

It does not disappoint.

CaliforniaTrip 247

This might be the Lady in Black island. Just saying.

CaliforniaTrip 250

We wind along, new cliffs and shoreline emerging around every corner, each view perfectly packaged with blue skies and just a touch of mist. Every shoulder and stopping point is full of tourists attempting to take that perfect picture.

CaliforniaTrip 234

Yes, we were amongst those picture taking tourists.

Yes, we were amongst those picture taking tourists.

Our first stop is McWay falls. It’s a secluded beach that derives its name from the small waterfall running through its center.

CaliforniaTrip 268

CaliforniaTrip 270

No one can actually go on the beach ( hence the secluded feel despite the cars lined up along the highway full of people looking for the entrance). Everyone admired a view from a walk way nearby that looks down. We meet a couple people from exotic locations along the way.

CaliforniaTrip 277

We keep driving until we are in the heart of the Big Sur. It had been my plan to bring Jack Kerouac’s Big Sur and read it for the first time at the Big Sur, but I didn’t have time to make this happen. So instead I’ll content myself with reading it after as a way to let the trip live on. For our next stop we had planned to stop at Pfeiffer Beach, but we were turned away (due to full parking!) and decided to try Point Lobos instead.

CaliforniaTrip 307

Here we befriend a park ranger who joined us as we watched some harbor seals (Some of these seals actually turned out to be divers, haha), hiked around a little bit, and discovered a haunted whale graveyard.

CaliforniaTrip 320

Sort of. If you count national park endorsed educational exhibits of whale bones as graveyards.

CaliforniaTrip 324

Note: If you’re going to take funny witch pictures in cauldrons you find randomly unattended first check what the cauldrons are used for. You could be standing in something that’s former purpose was cooking whale fat. Ew.

CaliforniaTrip 327

Ann got cooked twice? Also the witch has decided to use a finger gun to accomplish her dastardly plan?

We bid farewell to the Big Sur and went to Monterey for dinner. The Monterey wharf was small, but cute. The place where we had dinner had a tradition where they give roses to everyone after their meal.

CaliforniaTrip 331 CaliforniaTrip 336 CaliforniaTrip 337

The rest goes by in a big blur. We drive back to Oakland, along the way we pass through GarlicVille (Fake name, real place), and listen to every song we have with California in the title. It’s the late hours of the night by the time we turn in our rental car and head to the hotel.

The next morning we sadly board our plane, click our heels, and head home sweet home.

Take Me to the Ocean

If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been lately the answer is… Florida [at least it was for a couple of days]. I joined my family for a last minute vacation in Destin a few weeks ago.

It was divine.

It had all the elements of a proper family vacation, such as:

The Ocean

Mom and Dad enjoying the view

Mom and Dad enjoying the view

We were visiting during peak tourist season so the beaches were full, but we still had a lot of fun. We set up our shelter and spent hours enjoying the ocean. We brought our boogie boards and our kite.

Bike Riding

We rented bikes and had a lot of fun riding them around the little community where we were staying. One of the bike paths took us down to Baytowne Wharf, a little town square of sorts. In addition to the bike paths my Dad and I rode our bikes to Winn Dixie one morning (where they did not carry Red Vines!). We also found an abandoned set of shops while we were walking and biking around. We were fascinated by the little ghost town.

Some of our neighbors

Some of our neighbors, we were by a different little bay. We stayed in a house instead of a high rise, which was really nice. Our neighbors were quiet and the house was very comfy. There was also a pool for residents to use, which we took full advantage of. One night we even had it to ourselves!

Reading Time

I managed to read four books on my vacation including:

  • City of Bones (Slightly addictive. I can’t wait to read the next one)
  • Between the Lines (Meh, not my favorite Jodi Picoult book)
  • Splintered (Fun take on the Alice in Wonderland story)
  • Gone Girl (Intriguing, but also a bit dark w/some harsh language… maybe I’ve just been reading too much fluffy YA lit lately?)

Waffles

Of course every vacation needs good food, especially breakfast food.

Waffle House Model :)

Good way to start the day

I cannot express how happy Gabby was to go to waffle house. It was how we got her out of bed in the morning. We designated the day Waffle Wednesday!

Our eyes may have been bigger than our stomachs haha

Our eyes may have been bigger than our stomachs haha Not even we can eat that much

Other yummy food we encountered in Destin: Graffiti, yummy jumbo shrimp and homemade key lime pie at a beachside restaurant, pizza night, and a homemade meal from Dad.

Shopping

Destin has some outlet malls so of course we had to make a stop. It didn’t hurt that we were all sunburned and needed some shade for awhile. My Dad hung in there [we can really marathon shop] and later Gab and I went with him on a more Dad-friendly activity: watching Pacific Rim.

Airport Adventures

I had a five hour layover on the way there which meant there was a lot of time to experience the Houston airport . Too bad all my Houston family was taking that time to drive to Destin! However I found plenty of ways to keep myself busy [including a Parks and Rec marathon via Netflix].

Plus there were some good snacks on hand. I mean, Whataburger and Shipleys in the same terminal? Yes!

Whataburger!

Whataburger!

A less fun airport adventure was my poor parents trying to find the Destin airport. The GPS lead them astray (a fact the friendly security guard told me happens all the time), but in the end they did find me.

Oh, and did I mention I got upgraded to first class on the way home?? This was a first for me and I definitely enjoyed flying in style.

Soooo much leg room.

Soooo much leg room.

And the most important step for a proper family vay-cay….These amazing people:

Mom, Dad, and Gab

The fam!

It was lovely to get away and just spend time with the people I love. I can’t wait to see them again [thank goodness school is starting and they’ll all be driving up here soon].

Currently: taking it easy after a fun weekend where I finally saw The Way Way Back [Loved it!] and attended a bridal shower for my good friend Teal [Love her too].
