Bon Appetit

I’m in the middle of a wonderful Christmas/ New Years vacation, but I thought I should take a minute to give an update or two. At the very least I wanted to share one highlight from Christmas: our cooking class! The last two Christmases we gave Mom painting classes instead of a usual wrapped gifts and it’s been a lot of fun for everyone. This year instead of painting we decided to try cooking.

For our cooking class adventure we went to Sur La Table and took a class with Chef Robert. We missed having Gabby, but two of my mom’s sisters, Annie and Jan, were able to join us which was really fun.

First thing on the menu: Blini with smoked salmon and crème fraiche and buckwheat pancakes. This consisted of us making buckwheat pancakes, a cream, and topping it with some salmon. For the cream we mixed together crème fraiche with dill and a few other things [I think? luckily, they sent us home with the recipes]. We were a little skeptical at first, because our pancakes didn’t look that pretty, but they tasted delicious.

Next up was the main course: steak with sauce (steak diane) and truffled mashed potatoes. The potatoes we did as a group, so we didn’t do much of that individually. But the steaks we all did ourselves.

Chef Robert taught us a trick for figuring out the temperature of your steak. Relax your left hand [or right if you are left handed] and touch your thumb to your first finger. Using your other hand touch your palm at the base of your thumb, this is how meat should feel when it’s rare. Middle finger = medium rare, ring finger = well done. He also taught us the difference between regular butter and clarified butter. Part of which I may have already forgotten, but you can also buy clarified butter at the store, so I think I’m safe regardless, haha.

Ours came out a nice medium.

We also made a nice sauce to go with it. I don’t usually like mushrooms much, but even I enjoyed it.

Just Mom, being a professional.

For dessert we had dark chocolate soufflé. We prepped the soufflé batter together at the beginning of class so it could sit in the fridge. I had the job of pouring the batter into all the little ramekins. Later while we were prepping the rest of the dinner the assistants slipped it in the oven. They came out looking like this:

Chef Robert mixed cocoa nibs into whipped cream to put on top of the soufflé and it was the perfect touch.

Of course, the best part of class? Eating everything!

Merry Christmas Mama! Thanks for liking gifts the whole family can enjoy!!

Currently: Grateful for a lovely day with my Aunt Shelly and Amy and Brett. Them + Sweet Tomatoes = perfect afternoon.

Just a bunch of Hocus Pocus

This morning as I went about my day it seemed strange that it was already November, but in case I forgot there was plenty of evidence lingering on the streets. Smashed pumpkins, hyperactive kids running off sugar highs at the park, an abandoned bowler hat, and torn skittles wrappers woven into the bush. Halloween was definitely over. But I had some fun with it before it all ended. Some of my Halloween shenanigans included:

Baking pumpkin chocolate chip cookies while watching one of my favorites: Hocus Pocus

These are actually some that Gabby and I whipped up during General Conference. But Tyler and I made some amazing ones as well during our viewing of Hocus Pocus.

Making Halloween spell books

I made these to help my friend Emily with a haunted house she put on [More on that later]. I painted some and we created book covers for others. We also found a great tutorial on Pinterest for making spell books. Basically we took a book and hot glued some objects on [bats, skeleton hands, spiders, keys, etc.]. After that we mod podge-ed one ply of paper towel on top for texture. Then we painted the books black and added highlights with gold foil paint.

I was working on these books at Emily’s house and her cat, Merriweather, decided to step in and model next to the spell books.

Wandering through a Haunted Village

We went to the haunted village at This Is the Place and they led you through a bunch of different sites throughout the park. The soundtrack from The Village played the whole time. Some of the highlights were: the cemetery with the ghost bride, the headless horseman, some very athletic and mean little bears from goldilocks house, and all of the camouflaged scare-ers who jumped out us from the tall grass.

IMG_2761

All of my pictures of the actual haunted village turned out too dark and so so, but I think Courtney’s pictures here in photo op after the village embody the spirit of the night.

Carving a pumpkin of the emoji I relate to the most

Courtney and I created a lil emoji pumpkin together. It stayed on our porch till Halloween despite it’s unusually fast decaying rate. In fact, by the time we took it off the porch it was a very sad pile of mush.

Getting hooked on iZombie

It’s not what you typically think of for a Zombie show [definitely not of the Walking Dead variety], but it’s really fun. It’s by the people who did Veronica Mars. It reminds me of Angel and Pushing Daisies. Essentially this zombie-girl is just trying to make it in the world and solve some crimes all while dealing with the consequences of an all brain and hot sauce diet [Although that last part is a little first season Roswell don’t ya think?].

The first season is on Netflix, check it out.

Playing a not-so-wicked witch for a haunted house

My friend Emily and her friend Benji put on a haunted house together. They went all out. Every room was decorated with amazing detail.

It was an attraction for kids and families so they made it all an elaborate setup to get candy. First the kids had to cross the haunted cemetery out front and then when they came inside Dracula woke up out of his coffin to greet them. After talking with Dracula for a bit he tries to offer them candy, but finds it’s been stolen by the witches.

I was one of the witches. The kids had to “earn” their candy by helping us make a potion. I also told some fortunes with my oh so mystical crystal ball. Then if the kids were really brave they could go down to the creepy cellar for more candy. Afterwards they could roast marshmallows with Igor around the campfire outside. It was a lot of fun and the kids really seemed to enjoy it.

Normally the “potion” was bubbling and foaming due to dry ice.

I also read The Night Sister by Jennifer McMahon for book club this month a very spooky and appropriate choice for October. However, I spent the final hours of Halloween using my extra hour from Daylight Savings to fall asleep to an encore viewing of Hocus Pocus. Although sadly I fell asleep way too quickly thanks to the aid of some Nyquil [Can’t seem to beat back the colds lately].

Currently: watching the Hallmark movie gem, Magic of Ordinary Days

Here’s what you missed on…

All right, so I seem to have taken an impromptu blog-cation. Here is the really fast version of how my Christmas and New Years went:

I decorated my apartment for Christmas.

A little Christmas DIY

Later I attended the Brighton Christmas Party where I danced the night away with all my favorite coworkers and wore a really great red hat (all the best people do).

Love these girls!

My red hat! If only you could see it properly (I was terrible about taking pictures that night). Carol lent this beauty to me for the night.

I also attended another office event with a lovely quartet.

They won my heart by playing from the Amelie soundtrack.

Then I flew away to Sugar Land to see the family. I had a green Christmas (my favorite kind). I was happy to find our orange trees had actual edible oranges.

Oh Sugar Land I do miss you.

Oh, and there was lots of great food (per usual) .

For my Mom’s Christmas present, Gabby and I  took her to Pinot’s Palet (it seemed to be the craze over the holiday). We had a great time!

Our paintings were supposed to include a silhouette of a happy couple but we all ended up making stubby, horrible stick figures we painted over, lol.

I got to visit a few friends while I was home. I saw my friend Kimberly and her girls (I can’t believe Leslie is four now!!). I also had a gluten free cookie bake off with the lovely Jessica (We have been in different states/continents/cities for far too long). We made delicious ice cream sandwiches with the finished products.

IMG_3570

Like any good holiday break my time home also included a new TV obsession: Scandal (oh goodness the drama). My parents also introduced me to Call the Midwife (Very different sort of drama).

Before I knew it I was flying back to Utah. I started a new job the very next day (Crazy, right?). It was hard to say goodbye to the wonderful friends I’d made at Brighton, but I’m excited for this new direction in my life.

Whew, I think that covers most of my blog-less gap (more or less). More concise, coherent posts coming soon (Including one on my trip to the Midway Ice Castles)! Hope everyone started their new year right.

Currently: just finished Code Name Verity (Elizabeth E. Wein) If you haven’t read this yet I highly recommend it.
