Because It’s Christmas

Usually every year around this time, my friend Jordyn and I host a party where we watch as many made for TV Christmas movies as possible. We spend all night basking in the glow that is true love on Christmas with a ghost/boss/or someone else’s fiancé and the heat created between the friction of a single career woman in her late twenties and her mother who “just wants you to settle down before it’s too late.” The best part is it’s generally contagious. Every year, we meet someone else who shares the obsession. I get that this may not seem novel in 2020, but there was a time when these gems weren’t as widely celebrated.

Since I can’t spend this year cozied up with friends eating from a communal table of pizza, my 2020 Christmas gift to you is the at home made-for-tv Christmas experience. Ideally this would include a choice between a handsome craftsman from your hometown who values the simple life or a secret prince from a small European country of your choosing, but I can only upload pdfs. So here you go:

Bingo Cards

Here are some boards we used last year. Or go to this website (be sure to click the Christmas theme) and make your own: https://myfreebingocards.com/bingo-card-generator

Movie Guides

There is a lot of content out there. A few years ago I started making movie guides and it made ALL THE DIFFERENCE. We never make it all the way down the list (and you still run into some duds), but it’s a lot easier to make your picks when it’s narrowed down (Jordyn and I always preview the first 20 minutes at least which filters out a lot of lemons).

Here’s the 2020 Very Merry Christmas Marathon Movie Guide which includes new movies as well as some of my older favorites:

Snacks & Beverages

Last but not least, I suggest you order in pizza and rename your soda options to be more festive. Here are some drink menus we’ve done before to inspire you:

Extra Credit

Can’t get enough? Here’s a round up of Hallmark related content for you:

The Popcast- Episode 378 – The Nos of Hallmark Movies

Hot Pink Pineapples – I like following Cyn all year round, but she’s especially fun to follow at Christmastime. She does her own review of all the movies and posts followers’ reviews too. She’s also doing some giveaways this year.

Who? Weekly – If you haven’t heard of Who? Weekly, their slogan is “Everything you need to know about the celebrities you don’t.” Bobby and Lindsey are sure to cover all your made for tv Christmas needs. Here’s their 2019 episode.

Hallmark Dating Show Sketch – SNL

NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour – 12/6/18 – ‘Tis The Season: We Talk Hallmark Holiday Movies

Finally this worksheet that helps you write the plot of your own pandemic “Hallmark” movie (source unknown)

Currently: Wishing you a plot line that doesn’t heavily rely on being related to Santa

Favorite Things: Christmas 2016

2017 is officially here, but not before I slipped away for a much needed Christmas break in Texas. We made some usual stops at some of our favorite places:

Caught up with some friends:

Enjoyed the perks of a “green” Christmas. Even if it did mean it was almost 80 degrees the whole visit.

I love our orange tree.

Also this weird fruit tree.

We tried to be a little festive:

If you know us, you know that is definitely not our house, haha. We keep it simple when it comes to Christmas lights. Dad showed us this crazy Christmas house that’s on his usual biking route.

Bella, our dog, had to have surgery recently and to help her not interfere with the healing process she’s been forced to wear turtlenecks. I convinced my mom that she should have  at least have a Christmas one for the holiday season.

This day after Christmas we hit the road and headed to San Antonio. We stayed in a cute little house and had fun playing tourists for a few days.

I loved the decor in this house, it was a colorful, but very clean aesthetic. The spirit of the Mexican influence on San Antonio was well displayed and the owners also seemed very inspired by spiritual elements [there were multiple nativities, a buddha, and some Hindu deities represented]. However they also did not have a tv and said they intentionally do so to encourage people to do things like play boardgames instead … but nobody’s perfect I guess haha.

We visited the mercado where I did some nativity shopping and enjoyed window shopping and churros.

We checked out some bikes and rode the path between the missions. Of course, we also paid a visit to our favorite publication in town, Buena Suerte.

However, we mostly just ate our way through as many tacos as possible.

My mom is obsessed with the taco garage baby.

One of our eating highlights was Maria’s. It’s a small cafe that was right around the corner from the place we stayed [our Airbnb host recommended it]. The BEST brisket nachos ever.

And naturally, we had to take a stop at the Alamo and the Riverwalk. We’ve been to the Riverwalk many times, but this time we decided to do the boat tour and it was a lot of fun.

Boat tour highlights: When they pointed out the bridge where Jennifer Lopez filmed a scene of Selena! Also when they pointed out the stage where they filmed part of Miss Congeniality and no one cared but me. I then unsuccessfully tried to get everyone to watch this movie all weekend.

But of course my most favorite thing about visiting Texas is just hanging out with my favorite people. None of which want to be photographed at the same time. Or sometimes at all. BUT I DO IT ANYWAYS.

Hope your Christmas was wonderful and 2017 is treating you well!

Bonus LEAST Favorite thing of Christmas 2016: Getting a stomach flu type bug on Christmas Eve! Thankfully it was a 24 hour thing and I was still able to say hello at Noche Buena that night and enjoy some pie with some of my favorite Nelsons and DelaMares on Christmas Day.

How to win friends and influence people

How to win friends and influence people:

Step 1: Team up with a nice slice of pepperoni pizza

Step 2: Take your pizza to fun and exotic locals. Console said pizza when the dolphin upstages him.

The pool! The lake! Giant Slip n’ Slides! Pretty much the only place my floats didn’t accompany me this summer was Seven Peaks [Although it would have been amusing to see a pizza float in the middle of the wave pool].

At Slide the City we had a number of floats with us and while my pizza definitely got reactions, the dolphin float stole the show. A guy came over and offered to pay us to ride the dolphin down the slide while full on monologuing about his love of the dolphin. We leant him Herbert [said dolphin] and thankfully he was returned to us safe and sound despite the dolphin obsessed stranger.

Me sliding with my pizza [The guy working there asked me if this was a pizza delivery, get it???] at Slide the City in downtown  Salt Lake City [it covered three blocks].

Step 3: Assemble a squad of likeminded friends

What makes a float day better? More floats, of course. Not all of these are mine, but I enjoyed taking them out for a spin.

Lifehack: If you have a large amount of floats to inflate, but only a $3 plastic pump to blow them up, Gilmore Girls help pass the time. Also maybe eventually buy a second electric pump.

Gabby moved to a place with a pool and it definitely changed my summer for the better.

We had a lovely ward “campout” that ended with a great lake day. Please note Herbert is front and center.

Step 4: Challenge yourself

While Herbert is great for giant slip n slides, it’s actually very hard to use this dolphin as a float [There are some serious balance issues involved … annnd the float may have been designed for children]. But the view is worth it.

“Have floats, will travel” has it’s obstacles.

img_5259-1

When you’re exerting yourself this much you gotta stay hydrated. My drink of choice: the diet pepperlada.

Step 5: Repeat

I think the float addiction may be permanent and it’s definitely contagious. I’ll keep you updated on next summer.

NOT PICTURED: The latest addition to the fam, a pretzel float. I snagged this baby during an end of summer sale and managed to get in one swim with it at the ward pool party. It has three holes so it’s perfect for floating with friends.

Currently: Excited for the next season of Project Runway to start!
